Karaoke competitors showcase shower singing skills

By: Amy Hadley

If you've ever belted out Queen at the top of your lungs or if you secretly enjoy getting stuck in traffic because it means you can blast the radio and sing to Journey, then the National Karaoke League wants you.

Every Wednesday night make it out to Bennigan's Grill and Tavern where you will find yourself amongst other similar people who sing in the shower with extraordinary talent.

It's only three weeks into its season now but participants hope that it picks up and becomes a national trend.

It's audience based, so you win by votes. And members said the key strategy to winning is to pick songs that the crowd loves and commit yourself completely.

The National Karaoke League founder Chris Larkin said a lot of his friends have trouble understanding his penchant for karaoke singing.

"Honestly, what I tell them is to come out for one night, and see all these performers and see what an amazing performance it is," he said.

Members say you don't need to be a good singer, but it helps if you perform well.

The National Karaoke League turns singing into a competitive team sport and they're challenging Austinites to show their vocal prowess.

Felicia Adams, a karaoke league member, won the most recent competition with an all girls performance, singing to Boyz II Men.
