Ladies Without Limits: Last-minute jitters

By: Veronica Castelo

Swimming, biking, and running are how veteran triathlete Cassie Burt and first timers Jessica Becker-Matthews and Lisa Johnson have spent the last nine weeks.

"This week I'm feeling really good, and I'm just giving everything I have every day," Johnson said.

Like many women, these three have had to fit training into their busy lives. Next Sunday, their efforts will be put to the test during the Danskin Triathlon. Each of the women said they are ready but nervous.

"I know I can swim the length. I know I can bike the length. I know I can run-slash-walk the length," Becker-Matthews said. "Can I do it all in the same day? That's the question."

Tri Zones Coach Colleen Quindlen said being nervous is normal.

"There's a whole bunch of women out there who are having the same nervousness as you are," Quindlen said.

The key to overcoming those nerves is positive thoughts.

"Instead of saying, 'I'm scared of the swim,' say, 'I'm strong in the swim, and I can do the swim. I've been training for the bike, so I can do the bike,' and just be into the race," Quindlen said.

While nervous, Lisa, Jessica, and Cassie are confident they'll be among the more than 3,000 women expected to cross the finish line.

"There's no doubt we are going to make it," Johnson said.

Becker-Matthews said her family will be at the race and she refuses to disappoint.

"Oh it's going to happen," she said. "I might have to cross the line on a gurney, but it's going to happen."

Veteran triathlete Burt advises first-timers to take the advice her former coaches gave her.

"You've trained and you've practiced and you've gotten there, so as long as you get to the starting line you are going to get to the finish line," she said.

And that finish line now is just days away.
