Fashion with freedom and purpose

By: Rachel Elsberry

Abi Ferrin is a fashion designer of a different ilk. She’s not just selling clothes.

“I’m selling freedom for women," Ferrin said. "I want women to be freed from their societal concepts where they don’t feel good about themselves."

Ferrin's line of clothing quells the common woman's query about whether her curves are suitable for her clothes. That's where Ferrin's line of clothing is distinctive.

"I really design for all women," she said.

Her line’s motto is fashion with freedom and purpose.

Ferrin works with women being rescued out of the sex trade in Nepal and Cambodia, incorporating various elements of her brand.

Things like hand-carved buffalo bone and coconut wood buttons are adorned on garments. Each item of clothing gets shipped with one on the hang tag even if it’s not incorporated into the garment. But that’s not the only thing that makes women feel great about wearing Abi’s clothes.

“I have dressed everyone in Hollywood from Roselyn Sanchez who is a perfect size zero to two to Jennifer Hudson who is a very curvy woman,” she said.

“It’s all about how a woman feels,” she said.

The bread and butter of Abi’s line is also the most versatile. It’s her Signature 5 Way Top.

You can tie the top in five different ways.

"It’s very flattering and fits every figure,” she said.

It's part of her fall collection. And she's very proud of the D’Andra Balero.

"It’s such a dramatic piece," she said. "It’s got the beautiful pleat on the back and the origami fabric just kind of stands on its own.”

She said it is a really exciting piece because of the straps that are handcrafted by Texas jewelry designer Rachelle Dauphinee.

It’s fairly conservative in the front with a little party in the back.

“Jersey dresses are another thing I love, making a jersey dress that will look great on a wide variety of body types," she said.

It will also look fine with flip flops, she said.

Fennin last lived in L.A. but now lives in Dallas and she got engaged in Austin.

“You know what they say about that. I probably won’t be getting out of Texas,” she said.

For Texas women, that’s quite all right.

“Texas women love clothes and they are not afraid to try new things. They’re very experimental,” she said.

About her designs, Fennin says, she creates her designs with her customers in mind.
