Box jumps for explosive power, strength

By: Rachel Elsberry

Box jumps, also known as plyo platforms are a must-have training tool for explosive jump and speed training such as plyometrics. In using box jumping exercises, you're using your body weight and gravity to build muscle.

Box jumps are a common plyometrics exercise perfectly suited to increase your strength and stamina as well as your vertical jump height.

The exercise is deceptively simple. It extends the muscles of the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes – then explosively contracts them to create upward momentum.

Preparation: Stand on the box close to front edge facing platform.

Execution: Step off box landing on both feet between box and platform. Jump off the ground as fast as possible onto the platform.

In short: squat down, leap up and land softly.

The result of this effective and efficient movement is the development of the fast twitch muscle fibers and it develops the ability to jump higher. The box jump requires coordination, agility, accuracy, and balance. Proper technique often demands practice at lower heights until you achieve mastery. Then, bring on the picnic tables.
