Puerto Rican culture center celebrates 12 years
The Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center celebrated its 12th anniversary Sunday.
The center's director said it's the only Puerto Rican culture center in the southwest.
Their program includes the history of some of the first U.S. territory's first inhabitants.
"The history books say the Taino people are dead, but they are so incorrect. Back in the days of the conquest, Tainos went to the mountains to hide. We, as people, are coming out of the mountains and taking our traditions out of hiding and we're celebrating so that the entire world that we the Tainos are still here," Puerto Rican Cultural Centers spokesperson, Ana Maria Tekina-eiru Maynard, said.
The center is run by volunteers and is funded by the City of Austin Cultural Arts Program and the Texas Commission for the Arts.
