Coen Brothers movie transforms Central Texas city
Downtown Granger is being transformed into a movie set.
People who live in Granger, a city in northern Williamson County, call it a peaceful place where downtown business owners know nearly everyone who walks in the door.
Now, that downtown area is being transformed into a movie set for part of the remake of the film "True Grit." The original movie, released in 1969, earned John Wayne an Academy Award for Best Actor. This time around, it's a major motion picture directed by the Coen brothers, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.
"They're transforming Granger into Fort Smith, Arkansas," Granger National Bank President Dan Johnson said. "I hope it doesn't interfere with our customers too much."
For the movie, Johnson said crews will build artificial doors over the windows of Granger National Bank. The bank's name will temporarily change and the doors will mark the front of a sheriff's office and a lawyer's office.

Johnson, who has served as the bank's president since 1998, said the film set construction is the biggest downtown transformation he's seen since he began his job.
Granger alderwoman Rita Marburger is excited about the opportunities the construction offers the city.
"I think all of our buildings needed repairs. The wood was rotting. Now that they're putting the movie set in, they're repairing a lot of it," Marburger said. "We can't seem to get businesses to come in. And we're hoping that with this movie, it'll give us a boost."
She's also eager to see the celebrities.
"Especially Matt Damon," she said.
Many of the storefronts and other facades will be taken down once the film finishes its stay in Granger. A publicist for the movie said a filming schedule has not been finalized yet.
In the past, other films have used Granger as a backdrop, including the 2006 thriller "The Return."
