Actor Christopher Lloyd, who plays Dr. Emmett Brown, made a surprise appearance. His character, also known as "Doc Brown", invented the flux capacitor that allowed Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, to travel through time.
Lloyd arrived outside the theater in a DeLorean, the iconic time machine vehicle of the film franchise. Three other DeLoreans sat outside the theater during the screening. The cars came from a local car club, but are the same 1981 DMC 12 models as those used in the film.
According to Internet Movie DataBase, "Back to the Future" was the top grossing film of 1985.
Alamo Drafthouse is celebrating the anniversary as part of its Food and Film Signature Series.
