"Local" is the message Austin-owned shops are trying to sell this Fourth of July weekend.

The Austin Independent Business Alliance joined forces with dozens of business owners in an effort keep more dollars at home.

One of the co-owners of Spider House, a popular central Austin coffee shop and bar, said spending your cash locally, seems to be an nationwide economic trend that contributes to local culture.

"What's happening in America is people are sort of understanding, that it's like, 'OK, I want to get out of my comfort zone, I don't have to go travel," It's like, ‘Let's give our money to the local businesses that add a very unique flavor.’"

A recent economic study in Grand Rapids Michigan shows that for every $100 you spend in a local shop, $45 stays at home. That’s compared to only $14 when you make a purchase at a national chain.
