Girlstart summer camp met with a surprise visitor Monday.
U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul dropped by to speak about the importance of STEM education.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The program recently received increased federal investment as part of the America Competes Act. The movement aims to improve STEM education and prepare students for future science and technology careers.
"This is the future for the country and we're trying to make it fun and exciting. We talk about math and science, and a lot of students get bored with the idea," McCaul said. "But we're trying to make it exciting in camps like this, so they can be the next generation of scientists and engineers."
Girlstart incorporates STEM education through a variety of hands-on activities, including building robots, designing computer games and exploring marine biology.
