After several transfers from
Town Lake Animal Center and three smaller shelters,
The Austin Humane Society is 200 percent above capacity.
To accommodate the influx of cats, the humane society is hosting a 'Feline Free Fur All' from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Adoption fees for cats will be waived.
The additional animals will be housed at the human society until the kittens find permanent homes.
"Three of the shelters have much smaller adoption programs. They're in rural areas and they reached out to us earlier this week and asked for some help. They don't have the adoption traffic to get these guys adopted, and they really wanted to save their lives," Lisa Starr with The Austin Humane Society said.
Starr said there might be a misconception with the recent no-kill moratorium. Town Lake Animal Center is only no-kill if they have free space available.
The human society hopes to find homes for the 70 free cats and kittens this Saturday during the 'Feline Free Fur All' event.
