Under the sun and in a scenic garden, Hannah Breckbill is tending to the plants she has nurtured.

Breckbill is an intern with World Hunger Relief Incorporated in Waco, or WHRI. It is a place where she and other interns and volunteers are gaining the agriculture experience they have been looking for.

"I got to start right away as a produce intern. So I've been here a year learning all about how to grow vegetables," Breckbill said.

Putting an end to hunger is WHRI’s mission.

"I'm really most interested in working in the United States and growing food here for people here," she said.

Some of the interns will go on to work out of the country.

On the farm, there is one project aimed to help those in Haiti. It is an area of land with two small rice plots. The grain is not grown the traditional way. At WHRI, they use a different technique that uses less water but can produce higher yields.

Intern Justin Bullock said they are sharing the special technique with Haitians.

"Several farmers are trying that technique out and it's working pretty well for them," he said.

As for the interns, they are just doing what they love.

"I do enjoy working really hard and watching plants grow and bloom and fruit," Breckbill said.

The World Hunger Relief Incorporated has trained more than 300 interns and worked in 20 countries since 1979.

Their interns live on the grounds and receive a stipend.
