With temperatures expected to drop below freezing the next couple of nights, homeless advocates are working to make sure that displaced people in Austin stay warm.

Richard Troxell is the president of House the Homeless. He said thermal underwear, a hat, scarf and gloves can go a long way to keep homeless people warm, even if they have to sleep outside.

"It's a life saving situation,” he said. “And this is the protection that they need. We try to make it available to everybody.”

House the Homeless holds an annual drive to collect cold weather essentials. In 2009, the group outfitted more than 500 homeless people in Austin.

Just $10 buys a set of thermals and $25 also pays for a hat, scarf and gloves. Click here for information about donating.
