Three women from Austin are participating in a week-and-a-half long ride for the “Race Across America” event, which has been deemed the world’s toughest bicycle race.

They are calling themselves “Team Red.”

"I've just read about RAAM, and I've had it in the back of my mind for years, since we started talking about it and I jumped on board, and I'm really excited to do this," Team Red rider Sue Schrader said.

They aren't riding from California to Maryland for the prize, but rather to raise awareness for heart disease, which affects millions of people every year.

"Unlike cancer and other diseases, you probably have less control over them, heart disease, you have almost 100 percent control over what you can do," team member Susan Fargo said.

The team is sponsored by the Heart Hospital of Austin, among others.

"We'd like to commend the ladies that are promoting awareness of exercise, and living a heart healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Vivek Goswami with the Heart Hospital of Austin said. “In terms of decreasing the likelihood of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the U.S."

In order to bring statistics down, Dr. Gowsami said it's important to be aware of the symptoms, which include chest discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating and nausea. Every bit of awareness they can spread just might help save another life.

"I realize what we do is a bit over the top, but just getting people out riding their bikes around the block, walking a little bit, maybe set a goal for a 5K,” team member Carol Pope said. “Anything you can do to get up, get off the couch, do something for yourself."

The Race Across America Starts in Oceanside, California and ends in Annapolis, Maryland.

It's a 3,000 mile race that the ladies of Team Red, who are all over 40, hope to complete in less than nine days. To find out more about their journey, visit RideRed.org.
