Some people in Bastrop County are not only dealing with the loss of their home and belongings, but also their animals.

Animals found wandering in fire-affected neighborhoods were taken to the Bastrop County Animal Control and Shelter.

Thursday, animal control officials were looking for owners of about 40 animals. So far they've reunited 180 pets with their rightful owners.

"A lot of them are traumatized, very, very depressed," Troy Walters with Bastrop County Animal Control said. "No telling what they went through."

One cat was able to escape the monster 34,000 acre fire that ripped through Bastrop County Labor Day weekend. Workers at the shelter named him “Leisure Lane” after the street he was found on.

“We're not sure if he lived at that address, but the animals, they stay close. Even though there's nothing left but a slab,” Walters said. “The cats and dogs are still sitting in their yard or a neighbor’s yard looking at it."

Lost animals are transported to the Bastrop Animal Control Center. For now, the shelter is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., or by appointment.

Animals that have sustained injuries are at the Austin Humane Society.
