Unclaimed animals from the Bastrop County Complex fire are up for adoption starting Monday.
About 60 cats and dogs are now available, and adoption fees are being waived all week at the Bastrop Animal Shelter.
Since the Bastrop fire broke out, more than 250 pets have been reunited with their owners.
"The reunions that we've had, I think that's what keeps everybody going. I mean, this is very traumatic. All the staff has worked a tremendous amount of hours, most of them worked seven to 14 days straight, but when we see the reunion cheers and the claps and see the pet owners' face when they see their animal, it was very rewarding, a bigger reward than we could ever receive," Bastrop Animal Shelter Director Troy Walters said.
The fire is the most destructive in Texas history, causing more than $250 million in damage. It burned more than two weeks, destroying 34,000 acres and more than 1,500 homes.
