South Austin group hands out 1,400 Thanksgiving meals

With Thanksgiving just days away, about 1,400 dinners were prepared and ready to be given to needy families Saturday.
The Hand of Hope project, organized by nonprofit El Buen Samaritano, prepared to meals for the hundreds of families who registered for their help. The event was intended to make things easier for families during the holiday season.
Organizers said they’ve seen an increase in need throughout the year.
"Our food pantry saw an increase of 11 percent in the number of food pantry business from 2009 to 2010,” Ivan Davila with El Buen Samaritano said. “About 1,000 individuals a month came to receive food from our food pantry last year. Hunger is a real issue here in Austin."
