Interstate 35 has reopened following a fatal early morning accident.

Interstate 35 and near 51st Street were shut down for hours after police say the driver of an 18-wheeler hit and killed a person who was trying to cross the interstate Wednesday morning.

During the accident, the driver lost control of his vehicle and flipped onto the median around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday. He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“We’re trying to do it as quickly as possible because we’re getting into the rush hour right now. Unfortunately, as you can see, the semi is kind of split open on the bottom and it’s loaded so what we’re trying to avoid is some spillage,” APD Sgt. Jeff Slater said.

Police have not yet released the victim’s identity.
