APD searching for leads in homeless man’s murder
Austin police have identified the man found dead at the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail.

Responding officers found 49-year-old William Roy Greer a little after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Colorado Street. Investigators say he was in a sleeping bag with obvious trauma to his body.

Officer didn't go into detail about what kind of trauma Greer suffered, but say he was homeless and had only been in Austin a short while.

Now, Austin police say they want to speak with anyone who saw Greer on Monday night or early Tuesday morning, knew Greer or his “associates,” witnessed an argument or assault involving Greer or has any relevant information relating to the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call APD’s Homicide Tip Line at (512) 477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-TIPS. Information leading to an arrest or charges filed could be subject to a $1,000 reward.

Greer's death is Austin's 18th murder of 2012.
