She didn’t know much about it growing up, but Jess Mitchell quickly fell in love with journalism while taking a news writing course in college. The Connecticut native and Fairfield University graduate seized early opportunities to build news experience after graduation, working as an intern with “The Charlie Rose Show” and associate producer at News 12 in Connecticut.
After working as a photographer for two years with NY1, Time Warner Cable’s 24-hour news station in New York City, Jess decided to try something different and took her first job as a reporter with YNN.
Discovery through interview is her favorite aspect of the job. “I’m amazed how much I can learn from on 10-minute conversation. It can be the basis for an entire news story, and that’s incredible!” The frequent advice her father gave when she was a child to “make some new friends today” still motivates her now. From fun-filled weekend features to city news and human interest pieces, Jess approaches each story with a vibrant attitude and a colorful approach. She fits right in with a city as “weird” and friendly as Austin.
