Austin Pets Alive will take over most of the Town Lake Animal Center for the next three years.
Austin’s City Council approved a license agreement with the nonprofit Thursday night before a packed house of both APA! supporters and critics.
Several other animal advocates wore yellow t-shirts and addressed their concerns with turning over city-owned property to a single non-profit.
The coalition of smaller rescue groups said Town Lake Animal Center should be shared by all local groups, and say the agreement should only last one year.
The city is still able to use 60 kennels for overflow from the new Austin Animal Center in East Austin.
APA! is allowed to use all other parts of Town Lake except for the storage area, which has been condemned.
