In the video above, YNN's Jeff Stensland explains why Paul Sadler excited to run against Ted Cruz.Paul Sadler took home a win over his opponent by nearly a 2-1 margin on the Democratic side of the U.S. Senate race.
Statewide numbers show Sadler held 63 percent of the vote while Grady Yarbrough held 37 percent.
“We’re stronger together than we are apart, and that’s the way I’ve worked in the Legislature and that’s the way I believe we want our government to be,” he said.
He said the outcome on the Republican side gives him confidence that he can win the first statewide seat for Texas Democrats since 1994.
"I don't believe for a minute that a majority of Texans supports the Tea Party, and I don't think they support Sarah Palin. Those are his big heroes," Sadler said.
Those “big heroes” pulled out all the stops in the days leading up to Tuesday's runoff, but Sadler says not to worry.
"There will be plenty of money. There are a lot of Republicans out there calling, saying they can't go to that side. It's too far, it's too extreme," Sadler said.
Sadler's opponent former educator Grady Yarbrough was relatively unknown by most voters. Yarbrough said he used at least $80,000 of his retirement to run because he feels trickle-down economics is not the way to rebuild the economy.
"I'm from the field of education. Everything should start at the grassroots and work its way up,” Yarbrough said.
Yarbrough would’ve offered a plan where the Labor Department covers half the cost of minimum wage, while employers pick up the other half to stimulate the economy.
It's not an idea Sadler would bring to Washington, but he does have a plan.
"We are not going to have a long-term job creation plan until we do some kind of plan for our national debt. That's critical. With all due respect, Mr. Cruz and Mr. Dewhurst have not talked about how to resolve that debt issue," Sadler said.
Sadler plans to make it a major point as he challenges Ted Cruz to debates in every corner of Texas, between now and November.
