The war over women's health funding has been raging for almost two years. There were massive cuts made to family planning last legislative session, and a debate over the Women's Health Program has been in and out of court for months. Now, the loss of funding is starting to have a measurable impact here in Texas. Women looking for family planning services have 53 fewer clinics to choose from, according to a report published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Kyle Janek was appointed as executive commissioner of Texas Health and Human services amid budget pressures and changes to federal and state laws. Janek joined Paul Brown in studio Thursday to talk about plans for the agency, and how much of a shortfall the state is facing come January.

We are excited to announce a series of debates leading up to the general election. Matt Stillwell and Tony Dale, candidates for Texas House District 136, have agreed to a debate on October 17th. On October 24, we will moderate a live debate between Donna Howard and Robert Thomas for Texas House District 48.

We have also extended an invitation to the candidates in the race for US House district 35.
Republican Susan Narvaiz has agreed. We are still waiting on word from Congressman Lloyd Doggett.
