On the corner of Rosewood Avenue and Chicon Street, you can smell the flavor of Louisianan Cajun cuisine drifting from the Nubian Queen restaurant.

"I do hamburger, pork chop, chicken wings, fish and shrimp, jambalaya, gumbo, crawfish étouffée," Owner Lozina E. Stephens-Bell said.

The menu has an array of choices, but her restaurant is closed Sundays, with only homeless people eating at the Nubian Queen's Restaurant.

Bell started the tradition eight years ago, the day she opened her restaurant’s doors.

"If it wasn't for God, I'd give up, and I know he told me to do this," Lola said. "And even though it's hard, and I don't make the money, I should [continue]. I can't give up."

Lola said every month, she barely scrapes by with enough money to keep her doors open for business, but she's determined to keep it going.

"Even though sometimes I might have five customers who walk through that front door, I might have 20 to 30 waiting at the back door. So my day is not in vain," she said.

She has a soft spot for the homeless community. She was homeless herself for two years, but she fought back and eventually opened a restaurant. With its opening, Bell determined to help the community she was once a part of.

"I need that front door to come so I can feed the poor. I'm poor. Shoot, what am I talking about? So I can feed us," Lola laughed.

She pours her heart into every meal served in hopes her passion will inspire others to do their part and make a difference.

"It's not the income, it's the outcome. You see, the income is that front door, but the outcome is that back door."

You can help Lola help the homeless just by eating at her restaurant. She has slips on every table where you can leave a donation between $1 and $5 which will pay for a meal for the homeless.

You can also sign up to volunteer to help serve the homeless by visiting her website.

The Nubian Queen will be celebrating their eighth year anniversary Feb.6.
