LULAC calls for change at Eastside Memorial HS
Some residents of East Austin want a change at Eastside Memorial High School.

Thursday the League of United Latin American Citizens hand delivered a letter to the state's education commissioner asking for "alternative management" for the campus.

LULAC members and concerned citizens gathered in front of the Texas Education Agency saying there’s an educational crisis.

LULAC District 12 Director Gavino Fernandez Junior said he doesn't see how Austin Independent School District can do anything different given its recent funding problems.

"The current state budget calls for AISD losing $35 million the first year and $58 million the second. Where is AISD going to get the funding to invest in Eastside Memorial what needs to be invested in order to turn it around,” Fernandez Jr. said.

The school was originally called Johnston High School, but it was closed in 2009. It reopened as two different schools, Green Tech and Global Tech High Schools.

Green Tech was the only Austin-area school to be rated academically unacceptable last year.
