Time is running out to comment on Austin Independent School District's Facilities Master Plan.

About 50 people attended the AISD public hearing Monday night. The full board was not present, but Superintendent Meria Carstarphen was accompanied by two other board members.

"We ask that you do something that's historically not done in the past. We ask that you listen to the community, that we may have a voice at the table, that we can come up and be a part of the discussion," parent and teacher Juan Valadez said.

Speakers addressed the three major issues in the plan including: in-district charter schools, single sex schools and overcrowding in north central elementary schools.

"I think we have listened to the community to establish an 18-month process for anything that would seriously affect the facilities of our schools. That doesn't start until January 2012," Carstarphen said.

Last week, hundreds of parents and teachers attended the AISD board meeting. They urged the board to vote against making East Side Memorial an in-district charter school.

The board will approve the Facilities Master Plan Dec. 12.
