University of Texas Law School Dean Larry Sager stepped down Thursday.

Sager announced in August he would step down at the end of 2011, but in a letter to faculty, UT President Bill Powers said he asked Dean Sager to step down sooner.

Powers wrote, “I had hoped that we could get through the transition year without interim leadership, but that is now not possible.”

Due to what Powers calls “deep divisions within the faculty,” Professor Stefanie Lindquist will serve as interim dean until a new one is appointed next year.

According to University of Texas officials, Lindquist has taught at the law school since 2008. She previously taught political science and law at Vanderbilt University and the University of Georgia.

In his letter, Powers also addressed issues regarding compensation and gender inequities at the law school.

“The new leadership will be committed to exploring these issues and taking appropriate steps to address them,” he said.
