More than 400 children walked in the Reading Rally Parade in East Austin Friday.

Members of the University of Texas Marching Band led Zavala Elementary School students on a quarter-mile long parade course.

This year's theme was "Growing Readers." Each class as different items found in the garden. There was a float for the teacher of the year, and top readers were honored in convertibles and pedicabs.

The parade is a festive way for parents and teachers to encourage children to read.

"Everyone in the school - every adult, every child, every parent, comes together and acknowledges that reading is the power behind learning and growing," Zavala Elementary Librarian Clare Bresnan said.

This is the 22nd year of the Reading Rally Parade.
