The Austin Independent School District now has an extra $1 million to expand its arts programs.

The district announced the anonymous donation Monday.

Most of the money is earmarked for the Fine Arts Academies at McCallum High and Lamar Middle schools, but other schools will still be able to tap into the grant.

“Any teacher who's in a school, where the student population is larger than 60 percent in poverty, they'll be able to have access to the grants, too and be able to receive resources as well, so it's a great way to make a big impact on a very large system," AISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen said.

The donation will support AISD's new Austin Creative Classroom Fund.
