Most students are enjoying summer break, but hundreds across the state began summer back in the classroom.

For the first time, special camps were set up to help students prepare to retake all or parts of the STAAR exam.

"They feel a lot of anxiety to pass this test, but they're here every day. They're working hard. I'm surprised by the attendance rate. Almost all of them are coming every single day, which has just been outstanding," Reading Teacher Beth Reynolds said.

In Austin, Anderson High School and Bowie High School are offering the camps this summer.

Official figures released earlier this month indicate if the final state standards were already in place, more than half of Texas high school freshmen would have failed in five key areas.

The standards are being implemented gradually. Students have to pass these exams in order to graduate high school. Next year, the end of course exams will count for 15 percent of their grade.

Retesting for the STAAR exam begins July 9.
