Nearly a month after President Barack Obama announced a policy change for some undocumented immigrants, people are still curious about what it means for them.
The University Leadership Initiative at the University of Texas on Thursday hosted another educational immigration forum to help explain.
Members say they want to help immigrant students stay in the U.S. Specifically, the group wants to teach community members what they need to know before they apply. Members say the more informed people are, the better they can protect themselves.
"If someone's telling them they can apply right now, don’t trust them. That person's probably lying to them and they probably just want your money. So, wait until about mid-August when we know more about it," University Leadership Initiative spokesperson Karla Resandiz said.
Many expect the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to release the relief application in mid-August.
Earlier this year, President Barack Obama announced temporary relief from deportation.
The program is expected to help people who were brought into the U.S. before the age of 16, have been in the states for the past five years and are not a national security risk, to apply for work or school permits.
The permits would allow immigrants to stay while they continue the path to citizenship.
