Born in 1936, Pope Francis was ordained archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1998. He was elevated to Cardinal in 2001, by Pope John Paul II.
Francis is the first Jesuit Pope and the first pope not from Europe.
Besides his native Spanish, Pope Francis also speaks Italian and German.
Francis also participated in conclave that elected Pope Benedict in 2005.
