“Beneath the Darkness” showcases Dennis Quaid like never before. Not only is this his first role as a villain but also as a psychotic mortician carrying out evil deeds in Smithville.
Quaid is the leading man in "Beneath the Darkness," a small town horror thriller rooted in Central Texas.
Screenwriter Bruce Wilkinson and Director Martin Guigui first met during the Austin Film Festival and based the film's production 45 miles east, in Smithville.
A local crew cranked out production in just 20 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2010.
Smithville's Film Commission counted 22 local productions over the past three years. They say “Beneath the Darkness” spent about $250,000 in Smithville alone. Locations like Smithville High School, the city's police department and Oak Hill Cemetery are prominently featured.
As for the cast, Aimee Teegarden is no stranger to area after playing Coach Taylor's daughter in five seasons of locally produced "Friday Night Lights."
Teegarden plays a Smithville Tigers cheerleader in "Beneath the Darkness" and is one of four teens trying to expose a wicked secret.
Wilkinson is a University of Texas alumnus who unexpectedly passed away during post production. The film is dedicated to his memory.
Critics have been mostly negative in reviews, but producers hope the film finds an audience with genre fans, through a small release in theaters and by making the movie available at the same time through video on demand.
"Beneath the Darkness" opened in seven cities nationwide Friday including Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth.
