When most people take a road trip to Lockhart it's usually for BBQ, but the filmmakers of "Cinema Six" found another good reason to set up shop in the small town just south of Austin.
Lockhart's Hometown Cinemas isn't on the cutting of edge of movie theater technology which is why it reminded the filmmakers about where they started in the movie business.
"Cole Selix and I, we co-wrote and directed it, we worked in a small movie theater in Enid, Oklahoma so we wanted to find that small hometown style theater and Lockhart was perfect, said director and actor Mark Potts.
Potts and Selix graduated from taking tickets to acting, writing and directing independent films. This one comes from an Austin-based cast and crew with veteran local actor John Merriman anchoring the low-fi comedy.
"The thing that I like about this movie is that it is kind of a balancing act between some very funny kind of over the top humor and some very real relationships among their significant others or lack there of," said Merriman.
"It's in the same vein of 'Clerks' and 'Office Space' and those types of movies. It's about three guys who work at a job that they don't like but they also love it to the point that they don't want to leave," said Potts.
There's no sugar coating in this screenplay, its angsty adult language would easily earn an R rating, but that raw mix of humor and emotion is what the filmmakers hope can earn a cult following.
"People who respond to this movie respond in a hard core way. I've had a theater manager come up after one of the Dallas screenings and he was like, you are exactly - this is my experience working in a theater, and we've found a lot of people kind of responded to it that way," said Merriman.
"Cinema Six" recently made its Austin debut at the Blue Starlite Urban Drive-In.
The film will continue playing festivals while seeking distribution.
