News 8's Tracy Gladden shares a glimpse of what you can hear Thursday afternoon.

Pan is the National Instrument of Trinidad. It's a sound that inspires relaxation and images of tropical beaches.

The Austin Community Steel Band is a non-profit school that offers classes in steel pan drums. The camp offers classes to kids aged seven to 15.

Steel Band Director Cecil Francis grew up in Trinidad and has wanted to play the steel band since he was a child.

“As a little kid growing up in Trinidad, in the area that I was born, that’s the birthplace of the steel drum. As far back as I can remember when I was a little kid, in those days we could not be around steel bands. I used to have to stand by my gate and look at those guys play and dream that I could play with them, but my father wouldn’t let me,” Francis said.

Now, he’s brought his talents to teach children in Austin.

The students are putting on their show Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center.
