Friday night's show at Emo's on Red River Street looked just like any other, with a small stage, passionate fans and loud music—except this one was the last.
After nearly 20 years, the venue closed to make way for a new owner.
Artists including Johnny Cash, the Wu-Tang Clan and Cheap Trick have played the outside stage, which closed during South by Southwest.
Before this week, music lovers could walk in and see a bar stool signed by the Man in Black himself.
As for the inside stage, it's been home to countless obscure bands over the years. Bands who have played there say the venue's closing is bittersweet.
"Emo's has been a really, really important part of my career, and also kept me alive financially when I was working here, even when it wasn't band-related. It's a real important place,” musician Mike Weibe said.
The venue's spirit lives on, however. Emo's East on Riverside Drive opened in September.
