Capital Tonight: State lawmakers hope to shift national immigration debate

Guiding the conversation

Democratic Rep. Ana Hernandez Luna worked the room Wednesday, trying to drum up bipartisan support for a resolution urging Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

As someone born in Mexico and brought to the United States as a baby, she says the issue is personal.

"We were undocumented for about seven, eight years until the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 passed under Republican administration President Ronald Reagan," Rep. Hernandez Luna said. "And that was the way we were able to become permanent residents."

She and Democratic Rep. Rafael Anchia filed their resolution Wednesday, which takes language from conservative groups like the Texas Federation of Republican Women in an effort to gain more bipartisan support. From there, they hope to gain the attention of national lawmakers and shape the larger debate.
