Austin mayor pushes plan for Zero Waste
Before you toss a milk carton or cereal box, the City of Austin wants you to re-think whether or not those items can be recycled.
After the city council adopted the Zero Waste plan last week, Mayor Will Wynn wants your input for ways the city can help you recycle and what type of trash you typically throw away.
The city wants to reduce trash sent to landfills by 90 percent by the year 2040.
Right now the city recycles about 30 to 40 percent.
Despite recent declines in the value of potential recycle materials, the city said it's a long term strategy and worth the upfront costs.
"Our hope is we can keep our eye on the ball and continue to move toward this long-standing practice opportunity to do the right thing environmentally and economically, despite inevitably ups and downs economically -- in whether it’s the cost of gas to go pick up garbage or the value of that garbage," Wynn said.
