Longhorns Hope to Shine at Texas Relays

By: Lesley McCaslin

"I'm from Long Beach California, and it was cool running for Cali, but now I'm a Texas girl. I have to represent Texas," said Longhorn sprinter Angele Cooper.

Sophomore sprinter Angele Cooper is no stranger to Texas Relays. Her high school team from Long Beach is known for lighting up the track. In this weekend's Texas Relays she will compete in four events including the 400 meter hurdles. She's ranked fifth in the nation in this event.

"I started running the 400 hurdles in April of last year. I just started learning. When Coach Bev (Kearney) told me I was going to do the 400 hurdles, I laughed. I didn't believe it. I thought 'ha, you're funny!' Now I'm doing it, so it's cool."

"She was a surfer girl out of California, and now she has a little bit of a Texas drawl to her. We're definitely seeing her mature and grow into a great student and a great athlete," said the UT women's head track coach Bev Kearney.

Another fresh face you'll see at Texas relays is a name any Texas football fan will remember. Marquise Goodwin is competing in his first Texas Relays as a Longhorn. While most college athletes find it hard not only to compete in one sport, but two, Marquise takes it all in stride.

"It's all about being responsible. Knowing right from wrong, what you have to do to make yourself better. That's about it," said Longhorns wide receiver and sprinter Marquise Goodwin.

As a freshman, Goodwin made his presence known as a wide receiver and on special teams. Now he hopes to do the same as he makes his transition into his first season of outdoor track and field.

"We did a lot of texting during football season, and great players just have a way of showing up in great moments. I think he's one of those guys," said head track coach Bubba Thornton.

Texas Relays is Wednesday through Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
