There were a few changes to the Capital MetroRail crossing at 51st Street. Last Saturday, crews installed flexible posts and more signage to prevent drivers from stopping on the tracks.

Despite the warnings, many drivers continue to stop too close. If a train came through, the crossing arms would drop right onto their cars.

As a result, Austin police stayed busy pulling people over Monday.

"Primarily, we're doing warnings. [We’re] giving the public a chance to get used to the changes," APD Lt. John McMiller said.

Some said the changes are effective, but they also said the improvements have caused new problems.

"It's also really slowing down traffic," one driver said.

Another solution that's not working so well is the flexible posts. The posts are meant to keep drivers from turning east off of Clarkson Avenue onto 51st Street. Instead, many drivers were still making illegal turns.

Neighbor Stephanie Morris said she thinks she has the solution.

"[The city needs to make the road] truly one-way and not one-way for a block because that doesn't work; maybe one-way from like 45th Street up to 53rd Street," she said.

There's also still the problem with 51st Street itself. There is so little room between Clarkson Avenue, the rail crossing and Airport Boulevard that even a Capital Metro bus overshot the road and blocked the intersection.

To solve the problem, the city may also consider putting a stop sign or a stop light at the intersection of Clarkson Avenue and 51st Street.
