Jury clears AFD firefighter in gender harassment lawsuit

By: News 8 Austin Staff

A jury ruled in favor of the Austin Fire Department in a gender harassment lawsuit Wednesday.

Firefighter Nona Allen sued after she said she was “physically handled in an unwelcomed manner” last summer.

Sources told News 8 that Allen was participating in a training exercise when an emergency call came in to the station. As firefighters were trying to leave the room, they "bottlenecked" at the door and another firefighter touched the small of her back.

The accused firefighter was cleared of wrongdoing by the city's human resources department.

"We're pleased that the jury agreed that this was a case of miscommunication. We're anxious to move forward and put this situation behind us," Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr said in a statement. "The Austin Fire Department continues to be committed to a respectful, courteous workplace where all of our employees feel valued."
