Crews begin removing asbestos from Waller Creek bridge

By: News 8 Austin Staff

Crews began work on an asbestos removal project on the pedestrian bridge over Waller Creek.

The asbestos consists of a coating covering the underside of the bridge. It was discovered when the city tested the bridge materials in preparation for the Waller Creek Tunnel Project.

The asbestos must be removed before it is disturbed during the renovation project.

The handrails and the decking are not affected.

Removing the asbestos is expected to take until April 29. During that time, part of the hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake near Red River and Rainey streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
