One group is making the push to annex San Marcos and make it part of the Austin Community College taxing district, a move that would eventually put an ACC campus in the city.

Daniel Guerrero is part of San Marcos ACCess, the group spearheading the drive to get annexation on the November ballot.

"Our goal is to make sure that we're providing a campus that's going to be consistent with the needs of the San Marcos community," he said

Texas State University supports the plan because students could take ACC classes all the way into four-year programs.

San Marcos High School students can already take ACC classes that earn both high school and college credit.

"If we were to have a full campus here in San Marcos, I would think the possibilities would be almost limitless to what students could get, as far as dual-enrollment," student Miguel Arredondo said.

If annexation is passed by voters it would mean immediate savings for students and community members taking classes.

"If you say $137 a credit hour, $39 a credit hour, you definitely get students paying attention after that," Arredondo said.

Guerrero said an ACC campus would benefit the local economy.

"From an economic development standpoint, it allows businesses and local industries to be able to have some say in what the curriculum might be," he said.

Being in an ACC district would add about $100 per year to the average homeowner’s tax bill. Before that can happen, supporters need more voters to sign.

"By signing the petition, you're not indicating that you're in favor of ACC; you're in favor of putting it on a ballot so that our community can have a say," Guerrero said.

The Hays Consolidated Independent School District is also in the process of putting annexation on the ballot.

The petitions from both areas have to be verified by May for the item to be included on the November ballots.
