Wiener dog capital of Texas hosts annual event
A lot of "hot dogin’" is expected in Buda this weekend.
Saturday kicked off the 13th annual Wiener Dog races. This year's theme is "The Wiener of Oz."
The annual festival gives Buda its unofficial title as the Wiener Dog Capital of Texas.
The event also features a costume contest for the dogs.
"Usually I start with her costume and then match the background to the costume and play off of the colors I pick for that," costume contest winner Janet Barrington said. "I do it because it gives me a creative outlet. It just makes me happy. I smile with each little thing that I finish."
Barrington said her pug likes dressing up.
"She seems to like it. Of course she gets treats while she sits there. That's always nice to have a treat motivated dog," Barrington said.
John Graham's long haired dachshund was a winner in the patriotic category. Graham and Barrington say their dog's costumes were handmade.
"The hat we bought but then she put the hair around it and she made the jacket," Graham said.
Besides the races and costume contests, there are also cooking competitions, live music and a pet parade.
Money raised from the event goes to the Buda Lions Club. It all takes place at Buda City Park.
