A crowd gathered at Plaza Saltillo in East Austin Wednesday to promote a May 1 march in support of immigrants’ rights and in honor of International Workers Day.
International Workers Day, or May Day, is a global holiday to celebrate working class pride.
The Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition wants to remind President Barack Obama and his administration to address immigration reform. They said they're also concerned about Arizona's new immigration law.
"I think that the passage of SB 1070 just awakened this silent giant. These people are tired of either racism in our communities, either racial profiling in our communities," Roberto Flotte, with the coalition, said. "We were just awakened by this legislation."
The law allows police to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being undocumented.
The text of the law states:
"For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or agency of this state or a county, city, town or other political subdivision of this state where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the united states, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person."
Critics say this law gives authorities a license to racially profile and discriminate, while supporters say it addresses growing concerns over illegal drug trafficking across the state's border.
Organizers at Wednesday's event said they're not going to allow similar legislation to be passed in Texas.
Republican Rep. Debbie Riddle of Tomball told the San Antonio Express-News and the Houston Chronicle in Wednesday's editions that she'll introduce the measure in the January legislative session.
Saturday’s march starts at 4 p.m. on the south steps of the Capitol and ends at City Hall.
