Texas governor to discuss 'EPA overreach'

By: Associated Press

DEER PARK, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry is headed to the heart of the Houston-area petrochemical complex to discuss what his office calls “EPA overreach.”

Perry is scheduled to hold a news conference Wednesday in the Houston suburb of Deer Park to discuss a growing spat between state and federal environmental regulators. This comes after the Environmental Protection Agency's regional director last week threatened to remove Texas' regulatory authorities by midsummer if the state fails to comply with the Clean Air Act.

EPA officials say the Texas permitting program makes regulating pollution impossible.

Perry sent a letter to President Barack Obama last week asking him to prevent federal environmental regulators from taking over.

The governor said the Texas program for permitting pollutants released by petrochemical plants has helped improved air quality.
