Thousands lined the streets of downtown Austin Saturday night, waving banners and flags through the air for the annual Austin Pride Parade.

Earlier in the day, City of Austin Council member Laura Morrison declared June 5, 2010 as Austin Pride Day. This year marks the first of many for the City of Austin to be an official co-sponsor of the festival.

The event promotes diversity and equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Many showed up to support the movement by themselves, some, surrounded by family.

"When families bring their children out here, it kind of shows our kids they're not the only ones and then it shows parents we're out and proud; our kids are excited and proud of us," parade attendee Michaela Kelley said.

The parade kicked off at the south end of the 1st Street Bridge and wrapped up on Guadalupe Street.

News 8's Rich Segal emceed the event.
