Bicyclists celebrate solidarity as Austin Bike Month ends
Parking space was at a premium at the closing celebration of Austin Bike Month at Ziker Park Sunday.
The main goal of the 30-day long effort is to encourage more people to cycle and create solidarity in the bike community.
The executive director of the League of Bicycling Voters said cyclists face a number of challenges, but he's really glad to see more sharing of the road.
"One thing that's been noticeable in the last several years, bicycling, the drivers have been much more aware of cyclists and accommodating for them and, I guess, much more respectful," Tom Wald said.
Wald also said he thinks the safe-passing law has made a big difference when it comes to safety. The new law says motorists should give a 3-foot cushion when passing cyclists or pedestrians.
