City once again considering new recycling contract
After a series of failed attempts to negotiate a long-term contract, Austin City Council will consider a short-term deal Thursday with local company Texas Disposal Systems.
The contract would be for one year, with two six-month extensions. City council will consider a long-term deal later this year. It could include TDS or Balcones Resources, also a local company.
The city's current contract with Greenstar, which sends materials to San Antonio for recycling, ends next month.
The city's Solid Waste Services Department had originally recommended Allied Waste Services of Austin to finance, build and operate the new facility. However, public outcry over the company's handling of the Browning Ferris Industry, or BFI, Landfill in northeast Austin, convinced officials otherwise.
