For gubernatorial candidate Bill White, whose parents were school teachers, education is a priority.

"After all, in Texas we believe in hard work and opportunity, not entitlement or handouts and that means, in a modern economy, you have to have a trained and educated workforce," the businessman and former mayor of Houston said.

Education was the topic of discussion in Waco Tuesday, among citizens and educators like Mary Duty.

"We have needs in the classroom that are critical and how can we make the cuts that we know are inevitable, yet still maintain the services for the children that we serve?" Duty said.

Duty was joined by about 40 other teachers as they shared their concerns with White, who says he wants to find ways to reduce the cost of textbooks and the dropout rate.

"He knows how to balance a budget and those things are critical when it comes down to the point of running the school or taking care of the critical needs of children," Duty said.

According to White's website, educators are among his largest group of supporters.

"Education is the most important business of state government," he said.

He will continue hosting education forums throughout the state in hopes of winning the support of those who shape the minds of tomorrow.
