Artist Ry Rocklen spent Monday morning getting ready for the opening night of a new contemporary art space at the University of Texas Visual Arts Center later this month.
The Los Angeles-based artist plans to convert collections of Austin-found artifacts, including used carpet, fans, wind chimes and photographs into a site-specific work titled "ZZZ’s", according to the new center's website.
"I thought it would be appropriate to do a show entitled 'ZZZ's', based on the sound you make when you're sleeping, and so it's all found-objects that are going to be assembled together to make this kind of labyrinth of sleep," Rocklen said.
For organizers, the opening exhibition couldn't have come soon enough.
"We've been watching this space develop over the last two years, so it's so exciting to have a space where all of our Department of Art and Art History can come together in one big space," VAC Director Jade Walker said.
The grand opening will take place Sept. 24. For more on the center, check out UTVAC.org.
